Methanol or ethanol are excellent alternatives. Same for trucks and ships.

Hey, that is not a new idea! Solar Impulse was just that. A glider who would cruise a 30 knots, gaining altitude in the day and gliding at night. One person, no payload. Just batteries. And two jetliners with the staff to maintain it at each stop. Laughable, at best.
