- Correct. Most of our oxygen is archaic, produced before animals existed on Earth. Phyto-plankton in the ocean produced oxygen, and they died and sake before the oxygen could be used in their decomposition. Hence, a buildup of oxygen in the atmosphere over a billion+ years.
