Neither batteries or pumped hydro is cheap.
Due to their intermittency, both wind and solar require a backup fossil fuel plant, so your capital expenditures go up, not down. All you're doing is saving fuel, and due to the backup plant's constant ramping up & down to accommodate their variability, even that is debatable.
the saving though has to be seen in the context of overall growth in demand too. we’re gambling on ‘electric everything’ ..
