Not only are we badly informed but as demonstrated by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, our righteous minds tend to have intuitions first and then move to strategic reasoning later. Pure analysis through reason is not the de facto approach for humans.

The decline captured in the chart is the result of technological advances -- better housing, roads, infrastructure -- all while the weather has remained broadly constant in terms of how severe it's been. The question is what happens as extreme weather events become more frequent.

This is a good point. However, I'm not totally convinced by either side of the argument. It's certainly true that there is scaremongering though and that people should be more informed on stats
