What they mean by "existential threat" is the danger to the "earth God" as they see it - Humans, by evolving, getting innovative against the weather, discovering energy sources, growing food, cleaning water, existing/surviving is a threat to the "earth God" so must be eliminated

Fun fact: I reduced my carbon footprint for transportation and for heating by 2/3 (changing to a small CNG car and changing from a oil heater to a heat punp). Additional costs are about zero since both changes are efficiency driven. (smart solutions).
