Suppose the 'have enough' assumption were valid i.e. economies could ‘willingly’ operate within production possibilities, how then would allocation happen in such a post scarcity situation? Why would international trade work? Does ZIRP indicate zero opportunity cost is near?

This argument amounts to "some things are good now, so an alternative approach suggested ~175 years ago was wrong. Therefore we shouldn't do something only vaguely similar now." Degrowth advocates today are different from Mill and you should engage those not a strawman from 1850

The crucial point is the same as in 1850: if we ever stop making progress, we'll never reach a star trek like future. We're as far from "post-scarcity" now as our ancestors were back then.

I've been wondering about the link between modern environmentalism and Victorian philosophers who hated the industrial revolution.

J.S. Mill was one of the greatest economists in his time. You have to take 19th century England for what it was for context. In the 21st century it doesn't hold up. People were largely wedded to their occupation or the land (where they were tenant farmers).

The UK really wouldn't become a somewhat egalitarian society until the late 1960s. I'd love to see their Gini coefficients in 1913, 1928, 1950, and 1969.
