Nothing in this story seems to support the enthusiastic headline and lead sentences about a breakout. It starts with golly gee whiz assertion of promise, then provides rudimentary background...for the rest of the story. What am I missing?

Not likely. The reason geothermal from 'hot rocks' hasn't taken off is not because it hasn't been tried, it's because it's incredibly difficult and marginal. Like the ocean, deep underground is a hard environment to harvest low grade energy. More unicorns to not say 'nuclear'.

Now that's looking good!
