Good question and I’ve asked myself the same one. Recessions and depressions since late 1970s seem to be qualitatively different from early century. Greece in 2010 to today is best example: suicides, poverty, life years lost. But why? Bad studies, or different era and context?

You can't force people to work without PPE. We don't even have enough masks for healthcare workers you can't force someone to interact with the public without providing them reasonable PPE in a pandemic. Even the Chernobyl workers got masks.

Those who lose years of life during a recession have the opportunity to experience years of life afterwards. Those who die due to the virus, or those who lose loved ones to it, will not get their life/those people back. A crude comparison IMO.
