"How to distort facts 101" by Bjorn Lomborghttps://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/jan/07/record-breaking-49m-hectares-of-land-burned-in-nsw-this-bushfire-season …

There's no "distortion." The current fires may be a record for NSW but they're not a record for Australia as a whole. Huge bushfires are normal in that country. And previous bushfires have also killed far more people, another crucial fact the Guardian article predictably ignores.

You are including the area of nerthwest Australia which is sparsely vegetated and populated. The diffference this year is it a record for areas that are populated and there are fire fighting measures. The picture is 2012-13 season. Not much in the SEpic.twitter.com/6dxnQGG9kv

It may a record for areas that are close to population, but the death toll is far lower than the 2009 fires.

Bjorn, I take your point here but why do you think Australian firefighters and others have talked about “unprecedented”. Isn’t it also the case that the underlying argument that the drying of the undergrowth and so on makes the fire season earlier and worse?

It won't become 'unprecedented' until 102,000,000ha get burnt in a single bushfire season.pic.twitter.com/ySBehYkSSs
