Ideally, one should do all analysis. But climate models predict more burnt area almost everywhere, so merging makes sense. I see you also merged both fire types in your Science article in table 1 How did you get fire data for Feb 2020 in your graphic?

We do that and see that this year is anomalous in Australia, both in number of fires detected, emissions, etc. For all of Australia, the more you zoom into the temperate zones the larger the anomaly is. Paper is about global burned area Graph is cumulative emissions until 2day
