The only way to safely & practically reduce the use of fossil fuels is to reduce the demand, not cut off the supply. This can only be done by innovating as cheap alternative energy supply.

Demand can be reduced with efficiency and smarter machines, like cars, ships or trucks, or better building design, indeed. Hybrids or gas instead of coal or heavy oil for power plants, ships or heavy trucks one low hanging fruit that could be accelerated.
