GDP matters because almost 100% of people care about their economic well-being. Measuring happiness is more an obsession of certain “educated” people that think we should ALL care about it INSTEAD of money.

Think Maslow's hierarchy in relation to income levels. As income goes from abysmal poverty up to U.S. $5000 and more, other things start to become more important. Depends on where you stand in the hierarchy. At $1000/year, all you care about is money (food).

Actually, socialist CHINA -- i.e. a specific system -- has lifted all those people out of poverty. GDP? Yes, plays a role -- size matters -- but its what you do with what you have. OECD GDP growth played little if any role in poverty alleviation.
