thanks — yes, the reason I showed strong tornados above is exactly as your NYT graph says, that the rise in weak tornadoes is because of better reporting (doppler radar)

No worries. Reality doesn't care about our biases, and keeping it real is important! After all, it seems a fairly basic question - are tornados changing or not? However I'd be interested in your views on the variability data/studies above?
