I didn't dig for electricity-specific subsidies, but global fossil fuel subsidies were $300B+ in 2017, according to the

You are quite practised in deceit. They provide about 4% of the world's power which is what they are intended to provide for. Energy is a different matter. And that is from next to nothing a decade ago. But you know that!

Why is he wrong with the 1% of primary energy demand. Isn’t that the correct metric by which to measure? I don’t see the issue here. Unless what you’re claiming is that solar and wind are not substitutes for many non-power-related sources of energy (like for example gasoline??)

If you’d lived in 1900 you’d have said it would be impossible to have widespread deployment of electricity to the home or motor cars as they were too expensive, needed massive investment in infrastructure, and were too immature to be relied on.

Besides, think of the candle makers, the farriers, the wheelwrights, the blacksmiths who’d be put out of work.
