But we need it? What a stupid argument saying it costs money! If it doesnt get developed, it will never improve, and costs will never go down. Look at how much solar pv cost has improved. Whats the alternative? Keep burning stuff! Great. Thats a really good long term plan! 
I understand you think it inefficient. But $143G out of a world GDP of $85T (FX) / $135T (PPP) is 0.1 to 0.2%. It probably has R&D benefits - some kinds of R&D don't happen until rollout. Considering scale of problem maybe not all wasted?
don't be such a pessimist. And please, do your economic history. We built expensive, grids to deal with the complexities of locally produced but despersely used electricity. We can surely also also deal with the complexities of a comparable problem not in space but in time.
