1/3 Bjorn. Thank you for replying I realise the question is complex as forests cannot burn twice, at least not immediately & as I point out to Italian alarmists when high km2 burns are cited for a given year, forests (that could burn) have more than doubled in Italy since 1945.

2/3 We also devote vast sums to educating people about the dangers of fire & extinguishing fires once were left to burn themselves out and the practice of burning to obtain grazing (as was carried out throughout marginal areas in S. Europe & N. Africa) is actively discouraged.

3/3 I'm relieved that increased burns (so far) this year in the far N. have been offset by far fewer fires than usual in Italy & C. Europe where the weather has been wet. The issue of standing biomass converted into CO2 in an atmosphere where levels are already >400ppm remains.
