The problem in Australia can be car theft, abduction etc, but the greater risk is dehydration due to be left in the cars parked outdoors, the same applies to pets. Possibly just not a good habit to adopt.

As with all things, judgement matters. Leave the kids/pets in the car in the sun for several hours? Probably not. Leave them while you pay for your gasoline? Probably. Nuance and situational analysis is needed.

People look to pop psych & pop media to figure out how to do make up or to raise kids. I never did & don't. I just had a personal policy to not leave my infant in the car alone. Another to not have him lagging behind me in a car lot. Another not2be on my device, ignoring him.

People offer me their kids all the time. I take them home when they ask for food or need a diaper change.

Helicopter parents in our neighborhood don't even let their kids walk 2 blocks to the bus stop, safest place in the city. Not only that, they DRIVE them there & sit in the car until the bus comes. Training them to be snowflakes.

The biggest danger to young kids is themselves: they do dumb things.
