I suggest it is worse than just 'it never looks better'. It is worse bc as the problems get smaller they become impossible to separate from the confounds. Many of the 'problems' we see become mirages, which are inherently impossible to address.

As we see with poverty. It is measured by percentage of lower income earners. So it can never go away. In reality poverty has been greatly reduced in the last 2 centuries. On paper the percentage stays the same.

It can't go away by that metric, but it can shrink. If it's not shrinking, and worse, there's other objective metrics showing an increase in homelessness, food poverty, wealth inequality, reduced individual home ownership, etc. We can see there's a serious problem accumulating.
