Or, do the virt ver of what Japanese apologetically do (or in the 90s did) a full HOUR before parting ways: "Tsoro-tsoro shitsuerei shimasu." (It's (almost) time that I must be leaving.) All the while, taking small steps toward door, for ~ an hr (b/c abrupt departure is RUDE.)

I mean *no one* says goodbye in phone conversations in screen (unless it'sthe "big you hang up" gag or the character is going to die in the next reel). It's "economy of storytelling," but it's also just rude.
