Friends, as you know, I'm a huge fan of the Southern Catholic writer Flannery O'Connor, whom I consider a "pivotal player" in the life of the Church. But recently her reputation has been called into question. (1/5)

In fact, one university, @LoyolaMaryland, has decided to remove Flannery's name from one of their buildings on campus, and articles have been published accusing Flannery of being racist. (2/5)

In response, Flannery scholar Angela Alaimo O’Donnell composed a letter to oppose this "cancelling." I happily signed the letter alongside some 200 signatures, including the novelist Alice Walker and many of America’s premier writers, literary scholars, theologians, … (3/5)

Wait. A Caucasian born in Savannah in 1925 who a racist, that's the story? And we're upset now? Her writing was influenced by her Catholicism and her bias. Her writing is complex and indulgent, but her voice is unique and requires the reader to engage. That's the job of a writer.
