There's something pleasantly deranged-looking about the GOLDEN-CHEEKED WOODPECKER, endemic to western Mexico. Cool name in its native land: Enmascarado, as in the burlesque. This one was prospecting for breakfast in , Nayarit.

The cacique in olden times was El Jefe, the Boss. And this YELLOW-WINGED CACIQUE is most assuredly the boss of this flowering tree on the grounds of 's Hotel in . FYI, Garza Canela means Boat-billed Heron. How cool is that!

In 3 days of birding around San Blas, Nayarit, we've seen 25 species of warblers. Including this TROPICAL PARULA, who reminds us that field ID is nice, but nothing beats getting a DNA sample...

Sksksksk. This lily-trotter, officially known as the NORTHERN JACANA, was a VSCO girl before VSCO girls were cool. Seen outside San Blas, Nayarit.

It's called the BUMBLEBEE HUMMINGBIRD, but some bumblebees are like, "Hey, I'm bigger than that." This heart-stoppingly exquisite hummer was in the pine-oak woods above San Blas earlier today.

This FERRUGINOUS PYGMY OWL straddles the divide between ferocious and obnoxiously cute. Its mate (confirmed as such, they did the deed) is audible in the background. Seen today just outside San Blas, Nayarit.

Slo-mo videos of birds are all the rage. That's cool, but this Citreoline Trogon informs us that some species are in slo-mo mode all the time. See near San Blas, Nayarit, earlier today.

Scrub! Who you callin' a scrub?! This Scrub Euphonia seems just a wee bit ticked off at being thus named. Seen at sunrise in the hills outside San Blas, Nayarit.

This BARE-THROATED TIGER HERON channels its inner wagtail, and, oh yeah, a green iguana. Seen this afternoon along the insanely birdy backroads just outside San Blas, Nayarit.

There are many reasons, one quickly discovers, for nature study in western Mexico. Case in point: experiencing the recently split and little known MEXICAN HERMIT at its basically undescribed lek.

Ivorybill! It's an IVORYBILL! At long last, a definitive video of the IVORY-BILLED WOOD(cr)E(ep)ER! Seen this cool and pleasant morning in the wooded hills outside San Blas, Narayrit.

This bird has been known through the years as "Spotted" (its current moniker), "Rufous-sided," and "Red-eyed." They all do the job pretty well. Anyhow, it's a towhee, a kind of sparrow--an impressively large & colorful one. Seen today in .

There are few guarantees in this birding life. BUT THIS IS A GUARANTEE: If you spend any amount of time at all with Hooded Mergansers in Colorado's Front Range metro region, you will see them wolfing down crayfish.

This is America's other "juniper junkie." It's a Townsend's Solitaire. Like the Cedar Waxwing, 2020 Bird of the Year, the solitaire is utterly incapable of resisting when presented with a grove of 200 junipers and, oh, 5,000,000 juniper berries.

Marvelous adaptations of the Canyon Wren: * flat body for creeping into tight spaces * extremely long bill for spider extraction * orangey plumage to match sandstone * brilliant white throat to illuminate prey

Say hello to the Bushtits! The Bushtit is the smallest songbird in the Area. If you had 25 flocks of 25 Bushtits per flock, they would weigh about as much as a newborn human.
