Didn't a ban like that get put into place following SARS? Before my time, but why did that not result in much long-term progress?

Yes. And it was relaxed after pressure from wildlife traders. This time, I believe public opinion will support a permanent ban. The question is whether the government will listen.

You're welcome. Peking University is running a major online questionnaire on this issue with a view to capturing public opinion for submission to policy makers. Need to strike while the iron is hot!

Problem isn’t wild game trade. It’s illegal wild game trade and poor conditions in markets where they are kept. No one follows regulations because they aren’t enforced. As with many things, a response based on overreaction and fear rather than getting to the root of the problem

Sure there are certain animals and creatures that need to be banned but a blanket ban on all wild game is reactionary.
