Frequent reminder that "Biodiversity" includes much more than 🐼🐧🐍🐸🐠, even if 🐜🐞🐛🦀🕷🦂🐌🐚🐙🌸🌲🌵🌾🍄 are more difficult to identify & study.

I really dislike dichotomous keys that starts off with male/female couplet, and then doesn't tell you how to distinguish them. Come on, be more user-friendly.

Here are some from today! It was about 1°C and they were marching all over the place on the snow.

I absolutely love "simple" records papers like this one by Dan Peach & on mosquitoes from BC and the Yukon. They often go unrecognized, but are so valuable, and in this case also a delight to read.

After conversations w/ collaborators on various projects & lab members, I'll be shifting from using citizen science/ to . Might take a while to update everything but it feels like the right thing to do, esp. given our work w/ Indigenous folks across CAN.

Here’s the proposal that was put forward by Athena Dang and Justin Bai in 2018 for a fly emoji. I’m disappointed with how the proposal revolves around flies being an important candidate because flies are pests and nuisances though...

Can’t wait to see how mangled each of the different app/software companies make it though. At least it doesn’t have eyelashes like that new weird scarab beetle though...

Calling all & friends, and I are searching for the paper that synonimized Idionyx salva Needham & Gyger, 1937, with Idionyx philippa Ris, 1912. Please RT widely if your circle might be able to help. Mountains of thanks!

Yes chalcidoids can attack arachnids, even nematodes! All hail parasitoids!

I was today years old when I learned ticks play host to parasitic wasps. Like, of course they would have parasitoids, but I’ll be damned if it ever occurred to me

I just gave a lecture on taxonomy and systematics to a group of agronomy undergrads. I would like to follow up with case studies or examples where understanding insect taxonomy and/systematics “saved the day”. Does anyone have any examples?
