  1. Shocking story: To evade sanctions, Iranian gov’t asked billionaire Babak Zanjani to launder the money. He allegedly stole some of it instead of returning it to the gov’t. He’s now sentenced to death by hanging. That’s one way to keep a kleptocracy working

  3. This is remarkable. Paul Whelan is a citizen of 4 countries: the US, U.K., Canada and Ireland. Putin hit the geopolitical jackpot when he chose to take this man hostage. He can now demand ransom from four different governments

The last US spy scandal in Russia was in 2013 when US diplomat Ryan Fogle was arrested, accused of spying and immediately deported. The fact that the Russians are keeping Paul Whelan is completely contrary to protocol and suggests an alternative agenda

This is the same Russian intelligence service who exposed their entire international network by registering all their agents at the same address to get cheaper car insurance. Keystone cops at best

Last summer, the Russian government falsely accused me of breaking Russian law. My "crime", while working at the White House, was compiling the internal memos about the investigation of the Magnitsky case in 2009 and 2010. So, yes, I'm very suspicious of charges against Whelan.

Anyone who has any experience with the Russian justice system knows that it’s completely corrupt and everything said by the Russian authorities should be questioned and doubted.

Major new twist in the Paul Whelan 'espionage' case. It turns out he's a British citizen in addition to being American. I'm sure Putin didn't know about that when planning for the Butina swap. Definitely complicates Putin's plans.

BREAKING: Paul Whelan formally charged with espionage by the Russian government. Looks like Putin is moving at breakneck speed to create a negotiating position to swap for Maria Butina

Mike, if certain investors haven’t figured out that Russia was a bad place to invest after Sergei Magnitsky was tortured and killed its hardly likely they will figure it out now. Having said that, from my vantage point 98% of western investors won’t touch Russia with a bargepole

"Paul Whelan I believe was taken as a leverage for Vladimir Putin in response to the Maria Butina prosecution in Washington," says Russia critic . Putin "was in a very weak position. He needed to change that... So he looked for a hostage."

Is kidnapping a new form of “diplomacy”? Starting to look that way.

The arrest of American Paul Whelan in Moscow by the FSB as he was visiting Russia to attend a wedding looks increasingly like a hostage situation. All foreign travellers to Russia should beware that anything could happen. The US government should intervene decisively in this case

Azerbaijani blogger who’s in jail on trumped up charges of defaming a police office is in critical condition after five days on a dry hunger strike. If he dies, his persecutors should expect the wrath of god to come down on them

Russia Detains U.S. Citizen in Moscow on Suspicion of Espionage. Looks like Putin wants a hostage for leverage purposes. Generally countries kick out suspected foreign spies, not arrest them
