Alright, cats and kittens. Minor league pitch-level data is now available through baseballr. Definitely not as robust as MLB, but still a lot you could do with it. Let me know if you run into issues.

Combine the Bryant ruling and Mookie trade and you have encapsulated the major underlying problems within MLB, which is heading for a huge confrontation when the current CBA expires

The league needs to force a sale. This has been going on for far too long and it hurts all teams to have the Wilpons continue to have control over a NY franchise

You’re running all over this defense, why not go for it on 4th down given the field position?

Baseball nerds, anyone else having an issue when trying to download restrosheet data with baseballr where you get about half as many rows as you should per year?

And had I actually had time today to scan Twitter more I would have seen the always great analysis by , where we seem to be finding similar net effects

This was a very quick look, and I think it would be interesting to look at differences by pitch type, pitcher identity, and other factors to tease out the actual effect

At a macro-level, the pitch-level difference was +.002 and the PA difference was actually -.01 runs. Thanks to for the amazing data collection work

We can also look at pitch-level. Same deal--different usage by player and very difference results. And the differences are quite small relative to use.

First thing is the advantage is some what small in terms of runs above outs. You can also see that the use of the bangs differed by player. Bregman used it the most (130 PAs), but didn't really see a huge advantage vs. PAs without a bang.

Used the data from to look at the impact of the Astros' trash can banging in '17. I applied run values above outs to pitch outcomes (ball, strike, HBP, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, out) and compared pitches with and w/out bangs. Here's the difference by batter at the PA level
