Great things are happening in Rwanada. I hope you don’t mind me pointing out that access to electricity enables the use of these water purification technologies. At the same time, having a viable electricity users (like this one) as anchor loads helps the utility’s business model

I once saw a presentation from a colleague, @EmilyImli, where she reported UV treatment in water production facilities in many African countries are underused. I am sure she can provide nore details. (To be continued)

What I am trying to say is that to support the viability and growth of Yvette Ishimwe water model, we have to coordinate planning of water and electricity infrastructure to exploit synergies. And we need to develop plans that ensure the equipment continues working long-term

This may not sound like rocket science, but as I have learned more about infrastructure development projects in sub-Saharan Africa, I have been appalled by poor system-level planning that leads to projects failing after a short time.

And to add insult to injury, we haven’t been doing rigorous analysis of lessons learned. What worked and Why? What didn’t work and Why? The activities on the ground happen fast and impact asssessment can be a slow process. But without it, we may be throwing good money after bad

And to clarify, my comments are specific to projects that provide infrastructure services like water, sanitation, electricity, fuels. I get the impression that people working in the areas of health and education (for example) are doing a better job at rigorous impact analysis
