It’ll take a while to completely grasp the sheer scale of the destruction after the two earthquakes but I’m pretty sure, at this point, that most of the ten Turkish cities struck hardest are essentially…gone.

Many Syrians & Palestinians thought "airstrikes", & many Lebanese thought "another explosion". That, and there's a shared understanding after knowing it's an earthquake that ruling elites in the region will do little-to-nothing to protect anyone. Now that's a tragedy.

Heartbreaking to read. The last time I was in Antakya it was with a team from Kandilli's Disaster Preparedness Education Unit, which was on a DASK-sponsored "East Anatolia Fault Tour" to schools etc throughout the region. I hope their efforts kept some people safer today.
