It’ll take a while to completely grasp the sheer scale of the destruction after the two earthquakes but I’m pretty sure, at this point, that most of the ten Turkish cities struck hardest are essentially…gone.

#antakya ve #samandağ merkezden görüntüler. Dün akşam Samsun’dan Hatay’a kuş gözlemine gelmek için yola çıkmıştık. Çok isteksizdim. Adana’ya yaklaşırken deprem haberi geldi. Yardıma en iyi bildiğim Hatay’a geldim. Bunlar şehre ilk girdiğim anlardan… Bu kadarını beklemiyorduk:(

There’s finally a rescue group in front of the building my entire clan is praying for. A deeply close family friend for us—someone I grew up with—his wife & their little girl are stuck in rubble. No one heard from them. Please keep them in your thoughts. I need this good news.

The Earth is basically one giant livestock farm, occasionally interrupted by human settlements.

We're using too much water. Way, way too much water. Yes, 40 million people rely on the Colorado River for water, but that less than 20% of water used is going towards residential usage. Instead, we're using the water in other ways... 🐮

I wrote about the differences b/t THE CABIN AT THE END OF THE WORLD and KNOCK AT THE CABIN, why I found the ending of the latter (and its changes to the novel) so moving, and how m. night often challenges us to find the value in every human life, even his movies' villains.

This is why I’m sharing my personal stories, not keeping it hush-hush or private. The world can be deaf to my side of the globe. Personalizing it helps people not just hear it, but listen too perhaps. I appreciate Tom’s tweet so much.

So awful. And your posts personalize this in a way that makes it much more real. I know it's difficult but it serves a purpose.

Can news that affects me personally on some level just stop happening for a few hours?? I've got work to do. Thanks.

People on here are like "if China wants to try any more of that spy shit I'm going to parachute into Beijing with a knife between my teeth. Also I'm very scared of the the person who sang 'Stay With Me,' an agent of the literal Christian devil."

I am seeing tweets from people asking for help under the rubble, and then I'm seeing QTs from others a few hours later informing us that they were found dead. This is just surreal and heartbreaking.

I talked to the fine folks at the New Flesh Podcast about KNOCK AT THE CABIN.

To give you a sense of what we’re facing, 1,712 buildings collapsed (identified so far). You can estimate between 20 and over 100 people in each of those buildings because it was overnight. This is going to be one of Turkey’s darkest days - let’s hope thousands can be saved…

Heartbreaking to read. The last time I was in Antakya it was with a team from Kandilli's Disaster Preparedness Education Unit, which was on a DASK-sponsored "East Anatolia Fault Tour" to schools etc throughout the region. I hope their efforts kept some people safer today.

Devastating news from Antakya all over the place, the collapsed buildings, people out there in the cold, or hiding in their cars, many under the rubble. Unimaginably tragic day.

Deprem bölgesindeki arkadaşlar, arabalarınızı kullanıp, trafiği kilitlemeyin. Sağlıklı iseniz evinizi terk edin varsa toplanma bölgelerine gidin. Evden çıkmadan elektriği, doğal gazı, suyu kapatın. Telf’lara sarılmayın, interneti tercih edin.

Aghast at the sheer magnitude of the earthquake that hit Turkey, impacting a vast area stretching from the Black Sea to Beirut. That’s longer than the distance from NYC to Detroit. The tremor is the strongest recorded in this region and could be its worst natural disaster to date

Our pal of and was but a wee lad (in London!) in the year 2000, and he thinks of it as the year he truly became a cinephile. He joins us to discuss that and hear MANY Conan O’Brien “In the year 2000!” audio drops:
