Even before the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve had a massive shortage of doctors due to the American Medical Association lobbying Congress for years to limit residency training spots. Now California is even calling upon dentists to join the fight treating coronavirus patients.
The AMA has also worked to limit scope of practice for other healthcare providers (e.g. Nurse Practitioners) to keep them from competing with physicians.

How is this real life?
When healthcare is a for-profit industry and doctors care about making money almost as much if not sometimes more than saving lives, we get situations like this. Nurse practitioners, PAs, and CRNAs should be able to serve many routine patients without physician supervision.
Completely agree. I would add Pharmacists’ roles could be expanded as well.
Even the ASA -just days ago- was working to push CRNAs back to ICU as bedside nurses while simultaneously advocating for expanding Anes Assistants. Absolute ridiculousness
While all MDs dont show it, they have more knowledge, a larger scope of practice, are better equipped & a R A separate profession, you cant overlap them. As a Reg Nurse BSc myself, if a nurse wants to be a doctor go back & get your medical degree. Otherwise stay in your lane.
I’m not talking about BSNs. I’m talking about MSNs and DNPs. They can fill in the current gaps that exist in our healthcare system.
I know this has nothing to do with anything right now, but I'd much rather talk to and be seen by the NP I have than the MD she works under. I'd leave their practice if she left

Ironically, the AMA's lobbying to choke off the supply of physicians via limiting residency positions has created a primary care shortage which is now one of the main rationales being used to give APRNs full practice authorities in multiple states.
