I see the term “elderly” being used a lot in reference to the #coronavirus and I wanted to remind everyone that it’s a pretty insensitive term. Let’s use better terminology going forward, like “Older Adult,” for example. I'm 78 years old. I appreciate your sensitivity to "ageist" language, but I think you have gone off the rails on this subject. ELDERLY is perfectly acceptable to me. I find OLDER ADULT to be more insulting.

I appreciate that and I will gladly refer to people as they prefer. That said, I spent quite a while studying aging and using the term “elderly” is generally frowned upon. Also, the AARP article that I included finds it to be offensive.

I’m 62. I don’t feel old. I have friends who work with elderly people in senior facilities. Consider that both the residents and many caregivers fall into the high risk category. I asked 1 if she’d at least had flu and pneumonia vaccines. She’d chosen not to. It’s not required.

Maybe we should just call them OAF’s. That’s not offensive, right?

I'm elderly. "Elderly" is just fine. Don't tell me what I find insensitive. "Young lady" is fekking insensitive. All adults are older than something. That is a pretty lame term. "A whole lot older adult" now might say something.
