One of my wife’s 6th grade students didn’t eat lunch today because there was an issue with their account and they didn’t want to be seen eating the cheese sandwich that is given to students without funds in their lunch account. This is the America we live in.

The only good thing about the county I live in is every child is given free breakfast and lunch.

Dr. Biggan, it’s not only feeding them; it’s also removing the stigmas surrounding lunch accounts. Who has money? Who doesn’t? Who is on the free/reduced meal program? If they were all “free” that would all disappear. Equity. Stigma gone. Teacher here. Tell your wife thanks!

Couldn’t agree more! She says thanks back.

Why do American public schools have this for profit cafeteria model in the first place, seems so weird and a sign of broken capitalism

Guaranteed failure is built into our school systems. It’s a feature not a bug. It ensures no competition for the private school bullies who run everything,

Any idea of the cost for including lunch? Do you propose free lunch for all kids or just below a specific income?
-
Not as much as the school superintendent makes. In our county, he gets a bonus for test scores. Not the teachers teaching. Put that money into programs for the children/lunch and the teachers

Food, uniforms, and supplies would make a huge difference for most kids and their parents. All should be included with a public education.
