Texas has been and should remain a beacon for those who seek refuge from violence, tyranny and oppression. Refugees are our teachers, doctors, engineers but more importantly, our neighbors. Shame @GregAbbott_TX.https://www.star-telegram.com/news/politics-government/article239118873.html …

Do you have some data that Gov. Abbott doesn't? Have you called his office to start a conversation?

I have been fortunate enough to spend time with some of the excellent refugee resettlement groups here in DFW. We are reaching out to the Governor’s office.

That's good to hear. But is their data available to back up either of y'alls decision to accept or not accept more refugees?
@pewresearch shows Texas accepted the most in FY2019.https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/10/07/key-facts-about-refugees-to-the-u-s/ …1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I agree we should lead where we can. But we can't just keep taking people if we haven't fully helped the people we have taken before. Have all the refugees you talk to say they have been completely resettled? Are their needs met to the best of our ability?

You’re right. TX has taken more than any other state. That’s primarily because we are the 2nd largest state in terms of geography and it’s harder to resettle refugees to Alaska than TX. Your point is not lost that we should help people in TX too. Let’s expand Medicaid to start.

Is Medicaid expansion what is holding us back from fully settling refugees we have taken in over the years? I'm trying to understand how the Texas government measures completed resettlements if they do. Not trying to be argumentative. I just want to understand the process.

No, I mentioned Medicaid expansion because there are millions of Texans who are uninsured and that would help a lot of them (to your point about helping Texans as well as refugees). I’ll have to check on the measurement. I believe it is federal, not TX, but I will check.

That sounds good. I will look up the Medicaid expansion information and see if I can better familiarize myself with it. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing back.
