Thank you so much for everything you're doing! Running for Congress here and support common sense legislation like universal background checks on guns and ammo. (The science says that doing both could reduce gun deaths by up to 81%.)

California"s background check system for ammunition has denied several police officers to buy ammo because of mistakes. So there's that.

The solution is to improve the accuracy of the system, not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Allow private citizens access to NICS. Just like FFL dealers. You wouldn't even need to make it mandatory. People would do it for peace of mind. Advice from a gun owner and Lifetime NRA member.

I think you’re right that most individual sellers want to be responsible and would use NICS if we made it available, directly or indirectly. The ones who wouldn’t do it if it were voluntary concern me because I wonder what their motive is. That’s why it should be mandatory.

New York State has had mandatory universal background checks since 2013. (Safe Act) New York State Police estimate less then 30% of private gun sales go thru a background check. And New York is a Blue state.

Some areas like NYC and Chicago are very close to states with very lax gun laws. Many of the guns in those cities are brought in from those other states. That’s part of why we need federal legislation. So that people in Chicago can’t just hop over to Indiana to buy a gun.

True, but won't stop the violence. Indiana has easier laws but it's not a warzone like Chicago.

Chicago’s not a war zone. I lived just south of there for a few years and spent a lot of time in Chicago. It’s much safer than it’s made out to be.https://apnews.com/64e34cffb7db4dc7bf9bcda2ea201ea7 …

No, but the dynamics of urban areas makes it necessary to have different gun laws than rest of the country. The crime rate drops substantially once you leave Chicago. Like most other large cities.

I think it’s fine if cities have different laws that are tailored to their needs. I also think there are some basic laws that should be in place everywhere, like background checks, and that’s where a federal universal background checks law comes in.
