You start at places where you know many guns are purchased without a background check, like gun shows.

Even at gun shows if the person buys from a federally licensed dealer they have to go through a background check by law

Exactly. So how about the “private sellers” walk over with the buyer to one of those FFLs and get the background check done? It’s really quite easy.
