Totally with you on that. Idealism without a true vision of how to accomplish the goal is often used by politicians to sell ideas that have no chance of helping anyone. On the other hand, we see politicians who use a fear of loss to maintain the status quo.
That keeps us from electing pols with different backgrounds/ideas and that frustrates me. Right now, the diversity of backgrounds in US politics is confined to a handful of professions rather than recognizing that we can do so much more when different backgrounds are represented

I think you may be right. Once we get outside our comfort zone it’s easy to find that there is much more that brings us together than tears us apart.
