Fascinating stuff. Definitely not just a case of dragging a 4K HDR file onto a Sky server, then!

I used to work on the processing of UHD assets at Sky. My job was to get shows like GOT out with fast turn-around. UHD transcoding takes a loooong time. One glitch/failure it gets rejected. It has to be re-processed. 12 hours transcode times (UHD) were not un-common.

Just received a press release on Sony's home video launch of Mathilda The Musical, and it looks like there isn't going to be a 4K Blu-ray. I know Sony's 4K BD support has been getting increasingly sketchy, but I really thought this one would have warranted the 4K BD treatment. 🙁

Seriously, aside from being 10mins short (despite a run time of over 3hrs), it’s a dazzling if flawed ride for true cinephiles. Suspect it will annoy the living shit out of anyone else tho. Amazing it got made really - but I for one am happy it did (PS, Margot Robbie rocks) [2/2]

If you really love everything about films, almost to academic level, from its technical history to its studio system, the duality between onscreen personas/narratives/‘immortality’ and real life, and even the actual form of the stuff movies are shot on, don’t miss Babylon. [1/2]

Sky has today enabled U.K. and Ireland users to add Discovery+ to Sky TV subscriptions at no extra cost, saving them the £6.99/€6.99 the service cost before. Existing Discovery+ subscribers via Sky will be automatically upgraded.

If you’re prone to blubbing at movies, be warned that A Man Called Otto is a surprisingly effective tear jerker. Looked round the cinema as the lights came up and multiple people were looking at each other & laughing at about how hard they were crying, before crying some more 😂

On a different note, I remember many were concerned when Disney took over Fox that Alien, Aliens and other 20th Century Fox-made 'special screening' favourites might no longer be allowed out of the vaults and back into cinemas. Very happy that this has seemingly not come to pass.

Just booked tickets for me and my daughter to a double bill of Alien and Aliens at my local Showcase in April, and it's stupid how excited I am about it. Even though I know already that my daughter's likely take on them will be 'well, they were alright, I guess?'

I really need to channel this energy into 2023.

It’s three years since Robbie Keane’s little lad decided to sack off mascot duty - and grab the glory instead. The celebration lasts a full 17 seconds. Drink it in, son. Drink it in.

So 31 years after I accidentally put a huge scratch in a new 12in of Bang Bang Machine's Geek Love and swore never to buy vinyl again, I've just set up my new record player.😂Sounds lovely. But the scratch on that EP is still so annoying that I've just spent £13 buying it again😑

Thought provoking tweet from the company behind Avatar 2’s groundbreaking changing frame rate tech with respect to handling judder on TVs.
Quote Tweet
To avoid jarring judder, the cinematographers' rule is pans covering 1 screen width must be >7 secs. This works in cinemas where max screen brightness is 48 nits. Our work shows that to avoid bad judder on screens with 1000 nits (many 📺s now), that same pan should be >25 secs.

Great festive season of entertainment courtesy of Glass Onion & Alice in Borderland now topped off by the devastatingly good Banshees Of Inisherin. What starts as an immaculate little character study period piece turns into so much more. Tough act for Avatar to follow tomorrow…

Fair to say Alice In Borderland stepped up a few gears for season 2! 😳And actually manages to deliver a pay off worthy of the massive build up for once, too.

Holy crap - after a long run of mediocre or flat out rubbish films, I just got the perfect Christmas present of a film I actually really enjoyed! Thanks, Glass Onion. Also blown away today by the picture quality of my daughter’s new 4K Blu-ray of Coraline. Happy AV Christmas!
