    They shut down the Wheel?

    For 15+ years, when I've needed to verify someone is an NYPD member or get missing ID information for a lawsuit, the NYPD's Employee Verification Unit has given it. All of the sudden, today, they say the NYPD Legal Bureau told them to stop providing officers' first names. WHY? 😡

    The curve is flat. It's September and we've got closed schools, "open streets," and gutter dining. If this were a course profile you'd be in the big ring by now. Yes, the road could go up again, but we know a lot more about how to work the gears now.

    Let me flip this a bit: Why aren't you leaving New York City? I'll go first: It's my home. It's where my family is. It's where my job is. It's both tiring and tedious and a damn great place to live, and I want to see the city improve and capture all the energy of its people.

    16 years ago, on August 27, 2004, the New York City Police Department arrested over 264 protesters who had participated in a massive Critical Mass bicycle ride in advance of the 2004 RNC in NYC. It was the opening salvo of a week of repressive and pre-emptive protest policing.

    I strongly applaud and for this strong statement. DOT is behind the times when it holds back improvements even with aggressively strong support from local politicians.

    Bicyclists & pedestrians have long needed more space on the Queensboro Bridge. Crossing the bridge shouldn’t be a dangerous trip. Opening up the Southern Outer Roadway to pedestrians is the change we need now.

    Police misconduct and police absence/ineffectiveness are two sides of the same coin. While I was covering the Bumpurs case, the Buddy Boys in my home Pct (77th) were robbing crack dealers and literally selling drugs. Meanwhile, neighborhood was violent and basically unpatrolled.

    I had just returned to the Bronx to work as a community organizer. While NYPD killed Eleanor Bumpers and Anthony Baez, they often threw up their hands when we asked them to arrest the crack dealers who ruled the streets.

    The auto industry is as much to blame for teaching drivers via cabin and cockpit design that they don't have to pay independent attention to what is going on around them. Let the vehicle figure it out. Glad you're not too seriously injured!

    I just got into a collision on the Marine Parkway Bridge, when someone coming in the other direction decided to look down at her pedals for at least several seconds, veering towards me and then colliding with me. 1/
