  3. It doesn't have to be "tenure-track or bust." Perception is slowly shifting, but this bias still persists, leaving so many in pursuit of any academic job, even at the cost of mental health and well-being. Know that you CAN be happy and thrive in a many different careers.

That I wouldn't "use my PhD" in my job that doesn't technically require one. I don't currently do active research but I DO use so many other skills I learned via my PhD: program/budget management, public speaking, writing, cultivating collaborations, problem solving

Same here! I knew I wanted my work to challenge and engage me, & I didn't want to stop learning new things about language & learning. So happy to report that I am totally intellectually engaged in my career, and I have to learn new stuff every single day! 🙌

I thought that leaving academia meant giving up a dream of having a career with actual impact. In fact, I feel even more impactful in my job today, and through my work in career advising and education, see with great clarity how many truly impactful careers exist beyond academia

  12. If you're in a career, what misconceptions did you/people have about your current job? We'll share one -- so many PhDs we've talked to fear they won't be intellectually engaged in non-academic careers.

This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

You may be surprised how much impact your work has beyond the professoriate, and how quickly you can solve problems, implement change, and affect systems in a postac job. Informational interviews are a great way to hear from others who are doing this work.

...And when you interview, make sure you have a transition story that reflects this belief -- be positive, confident. Leave the negative feelings that might be there about academia behind (though they might be valid). Instead, let employers see the potential + excitement you have

Your PhD has impact. It may not take you to an academic career, but you CAN leverage it in positive, meaningful, engaged careers beyond the professoriate.

Big networking events aren't everyone's favorite place to meet people, but the informational interview is another great form of networking for anyone who's more comfortable speaking one-on-one
