I started this campaign on an audacious idea: that someone like me, with very little personal wealth, could run a competitive campaign for US Senate and defeat someone like Susan Collins.

Money in politics is the rotten core of our political system. This isn’t just a campaign slogan for me; I helped write and pass our Clean Elections law. And I was the only Democratic gubernatorial nominee to use that public system. Money in politics disgusts me. It really does.

Susan Collins is the very epitome of someone who has been in Washington for too long. She’s no longer accountable to Maine people. Here’s what I think: We don’t defeat Susan Collins by beating her at her own game. By raising even more money and spending more on ads.

We defeat Susan Collins with two things: 1) Conversations with every single Maine voter in every town 2) Love and hope. I really mean that. We can build a better future together. Remember that. Work towards it. That’s where we’re going.

The thing of it is that Maine taxpayers shouldn't be paying for peoples political campaigns, no matter what, even if that could ever work, they're just being duped to somehow believe that could possibly help make or keep elections "clean".
