Transportation reporters, please take note: readers assign blame based on your words. Fantastic experiment by from two months ago.

What to know what happens to small and rural communities that don't believe in planning?

If we just build a couple more lanes, it will be the end of traffic in NYC! You learned it here first, folks. 🤷

That Berkeley has declared a climate emergency yet has shut down zero streets to cars, has built zero new bike lanes, had made no new bus priority lanes, has had a major transit-oriented housing project fall through, is making me very skeptical of these pointless declarations.

Anyone blaming bike Lanes for congestion is telegraphing that they find congestion less inconvenient than real solutions.

Thesr vehicles are sold on safety. It took many horrifying backover incidents where a parent killed their own child before we acted. I fear we are going to require several horrifying "frontover" crashes before simply requiring the hood to slope a bit more. How tragic. 3/3

The case we made was not only were backover crashes more likely to kill children, they were more likely to kill the child of the driver. Today, truck and SUV deaign has made it more likely that a child will see their parent coming but the parent won't see their child. 2/3

I ran across this year-old article today and am reminded of when I worked at USDOT on regulations to require backup cameras on cars. 1/3

I honestly had to check the date on this article because I have read this exact story so many times. Part of that is the issue (everyone wants infrastructure funds but no one wants to fund it). Part of it is the shallow coverage.

My kids point this out. If only adults were as conscious of the disregard we show to safety.

Why aren't we surveying people who *don't* take transit?

Single-family zoning was the first of many obstacles erected to segregate communities. Redlining and covenant restrictions, which kept minorities and some ethnic whites corralled in poorer neighborhoods, helped institutionalize the racial wealth gap.

As it turns out, this particular proposal contains some discussion of real change. Shouldn't that be the point of the coverage? Isn't the number irrelevant of the results would be terrible and only pertinent if they are the results we want???

After 22 years in DC, I have rarely seen the press cover, much less lead, with what the money will buy. Very little substance to coverage. And there is some excellent substance to cover here. Disappointing but what I've learned to expect.

Who gives a damn? What are we going to get for the $760B? More death, congestion and pollution? Then let's not pay for it at all -- let's cut the program, instead. When will the press lead with the point? I have worked through 23 years of substanceless headlines. So frustrating.

Read this if you've ever thought: "The built environment changes slowly." EVs will fix everything no matter how much people have to drive." "People 'choose' not to walk long ways to go short distances on winding, disconnected streets built only for cars."

“Though a number of states have set goals to have their electric sector be carbon neutral by 2050,...those efforts could be derailed by growing transportation emissions, which are currently the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.”
