At 9 years old, my grandfather was separated from his family and placed in immigration detention. He was still talking about that “9-12 month” ordeal decades later, up to the week he died. The wound had never closed. After he passed ... 1/4pic.twitter.com/nEeE96hXrl

I learned he had been detained for just 34 days. 34 days is a lifetime for a child. 2/4

That was in 1930 at Angel Island Immigration Station. Family separation at the border has been happening for a long time. But the scale has become unimaginable. 3/4

As I watch the events of today, of course I see the face of my own children and imagine what they would suffer. But I also see the face of an old man who still held the pain. #FamiliesBelongTogether 4/4

I talked with @pritheworld to explain more about my grandfather’s story of childhood detention. In the article, I also address the question: Was he undocumented?https://www.pri.org/stories/2018-06-20/child-migrant-days-feel-lifetime-when-you-re-imprisoned-and-alone …

I cant believe the country I put my life on the line for has come to this. Causing trauma to people especially children will only hurt all of our futures. #Sickening

It's horrific in the extreme. Heartbreaking. Despicable. Cold-hearted. Mean. Even the kids who are reunited wi/their parents will be scarred for life, to say nothing of those who will get stolen by actual #traffickers.

Congress can put a stop to it. They won't, because they're run by the corrupt, complicit @GOP. That's why we need to take Congress away from the GOP to put a control on Trump.

I have my grandfather’s Exclusion Act file. To see he was fingerprinted and interrogated separately from adults was disturbing. He was a born US citizen leaving to go to China with his dad to live with family there

My 11th-grade US history teacher told us his childhood memories of being imprisoned in the internment camps simply because he & his family were JPN/JPN-US (not sure if my teacher was Nisei or Sansei, but he was born in the US) instead of the US WW2 homefront like other teachers.

This is so true. As a young child, my mother-in-law was sent for a time to an orphanage after her father died. Her mother was pregnant and simply could not manage caring for her children. It was traumatic for my mother-in-law; she spoke about it right up until the time she died.

My mother was passed between foster families and schools until she went to live with father and stepmother aged eight. "Couldn't" live with them before as they weren't married. Again, never forgot it.

People need to keep telling these stories to counter all the dehumanizing rhetoric of the bigots and xenophobes. Thank you for the history lesson.
