it’s disheartening to learn that creators who chose not to “play the game” and beg for people to click the notification bell are ultimately being punished.

It provides more options! Someone might want to see all videos in their subs feed, but not get notified about every upload from every single subscription (especially if they have A LOT). The bell gives channel-level options: receive none, occasional, or all notifications.

Options are good, hidden options are not. When someone hits subscribe, you should make them aware and let them choose "always, sometimes or never" rather than default to one option, not tell them and put the onus on creators to inform people.

Exactly. There's no reason they can't prompt people with a pop up that says exactly what the bell says when they hit subscribe. It's just adding an unnecessary barrier that most users aren't aware of in the first place.
