When did they lay out Broadway on a diagonal line to the Ave/St grid you see here?

My understanding is that Broadway was always "there," as it was actually just a path very commonly-traveled by the Native Americans, and it just stayed and kept getting more and more developed.

Amazing! Some of my family moved not too far from there maybe 15 years later. For those trying to figure out exactly where this was taken: "West 47th Street and Broadway (looking south) " according to Ephemeral New York http://tinyurl.com/ycyq5nww

When I see this, and think of how new our nation really is, I am just amazed. That I have had parents whose parents arrived here in1912 as immigrants makes me feel a part of a grand new beginning. I hope our country reclaims its morality and begins to rebuild.

Wow, this is great. Hard to believe but I would think this is the beginning of a lot of immigrants arriving from italy, ireland, etc.
