I clearly recall when Mount St. Helens erupted and the years of strange weather that followed.

How does this compare with what's happening in Hawaii?
-
Think of Hawaiian volcanoes as a pot boiling on the stove. Sometimes it splatters on the stove top. Think of St Helens as a pressure cooker that blows. Now you have to get out the ladder and clean the ceiling.

Great image. Thanks.

I was living in Portland at the time and could see the mountain from my kitchen window.

I was in Portland working various jobs including copyaid for the Oregonian which at the time had a daily update from Mt St Helens. It was my job to write the sentence. The night before the eruption I wrote: “All is quiet on the mountain.” Fate: tempted.

We drive past it going to OR coast and are now a little over an hr from Rainier. I grew up about an hr from Mt Mazama in OR, played in lava caves, & could see Shasta from my house. The Cascades are beautiful, but the RIng of Fire is potentially dangerous.pic.twitter.com/l50ur1uc34

Interesting aside ---- After St. Helens go boom, nuclear plants under construction on Olympic Peninsula were required to design and install new ultimate heat sink systems that did not use giant cooling towers. > What if cooling tower water turned to abrasive mud via volcanic ash?
-
Ultimate Heat Sink > emergency system that transports reactor core decay heat to the environs.

I remember being awaken by the explosion. I thought it was a sonic boom from the nearby naval air station.
