Wow, that's amazing. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I have a lot more documents and photos from the war. The whole thing is pretty incredible
Here's one letter where he describes photographing Hermann Goring who was plenty nervous, had a 5 carat ring on and wanted to see Eisenhowerpic.twitter.com/lZY7us0Nsa
The quintessence of American understatement.
Did Roosevelt/Truman even deliver an address marking the end of the European/Asian war?
Truman spoke on radio both times.
Thanks. You're better than Google.
Halfway through "Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans" - why this isn't a standard part of HS curricula is beyond me.
Thanks. So fascinating.
I love when you post this every year. Today is also Liberation Day in the Netherlands. The President should reflect on these things before receding from the liberal democratic order established by this conflict. Perhaps it's not so smart to turn our back on NATO.
His father was too old for WWII & it may not have played the role in his family that it did for most of us. My father was in for 4 years; my uncle died in the bomber he piloted after staying aloft long enough to get the crew out).If Fred was like Don, he probably profited off it.
Maybe you are right. Coincidentally, my great uncle also died in a bomber in which he was co-pilot.
Sorry. I have two cousins named for my uncle (my brother was already named and Dad just got two girls or we might have had a Cecil, too). Years later my cousins and I, grown, got into an interesting discussion about growing up privately believing he was watching out for us.
Aw, that is poignant and sweet. I’m sorry for your family’s sacrifice.
Amazing in its simplicity
Congratulations to any living veterans of WW2. Thanks for your victory in Europe and the cleanup work afterwards!pic.twitter.com/3FWqS59z68
Why was that not declassified (per the stamp) until 2012?
Good question.
A TS document or any of the other 4 classifications has a default 10 year date to be declassified..Automatic review after 25 years with 9 exceptions to remain classified..after 50 years, requires 2 exceptions to remain classified..75 yrs exceptional circumstances
Fascinating! Thank you!
