He never was funny, was he?

He never was. When I learned he profited off of all those Vietnam tours I actively hated the guy.

I can't understand how Hope remained popular through the 40's, 50's, 60's, etc. When he "entertained" the troops in Vietnam it seemed like the troops had to be told when to laugh. It was painful to watch.
-
Agree. And Hope did it to make money.

I also don't recall FDR calling people childish names, praising Nazis, and colluding with our enemies.

I do recall something about japanese internment camps however

Tonight’s speaker was awful. She wasn’t funny, she was mean spirited. This night is not going to have a positive effect on the national conversation.
-
Mean spirited??? Have you heard the vulgar crap in the White House?

So now you want to go back to 1944 too? Want a red cap? You wouldn’t be able to work as a journalist then, you’d be a lifestyle editor, or covering weddings. But slow clap for your wistfully wanting the past.

Okay, now I've got to go and research each of the references in his jokes. Then I'll be able to laugh at them. Someone should provide a 2018 guide or annotation to them.
-
Enjoy the history. It won't make Hope's jokes funny.

Ugh not even a tiny bit funny

The Hope speech? If you aren't familiar with the politics of the time, you won't get the jokes.
-
I get the jokes. They're not funny.
