Hubert Humphrey announced for President 50 years ago today, maladroitly advocating (3 weeks after the MLK assassination and during the Vietnam War) the “politics of joy”:pic.twitter.com/ENefpS7q0m

I was in RFK's campaign and after his death, it did not matter what Democrat jumped into the 1968 race. Humphrey should have won, but like today, we have had to suffer what the world would have been liked if RFK had won in November, 1968, or Hillary in 2016.

Only reason I contributed to his campaign was to go to a fundraiser at Warner Bros. Studios on Camelot outdoor sets. It was worth it to wander around singing songs from the movie/play. glad he wasn't elected, sweaty palms.

Couldn't help himself. Optimistic to his core. Didn't mean he was blind to problems-but yes, maladroit.

The Democratic party was fractured over Vietnam, and the liberal Humphrey found himself on the conservative side. He didn't quite survive the division.

HHH could loosen up. My father told me about the time VP Humphrey visited Trenton (I think during the '68 campaign). "Here's Pete Williams," he said. "I can get a drink now!" Williams was Sen. for NJ. He later went to prison for his role in Abscam.

1968 was the year I needed medical intervention. But I still carry it with me, unresolved. No one around me today understands so I read books. University of Wisconsin. Vietnam war. Gene McCarthy. Campaigning. Marching. LBJ saying he won’t run again. (I thot the war wads over!)

One of the great reformers of the mid 20th century Democratic Party would have been a terrific president, but was seen as a hack. He almost beat Nixon-how history would have taken a different turn.
