The Royal Blue made the trip from NYC to D.C. in 3 hours. The Acela, 60 years later, is just 15 minutes faster at 2:45.

The 1938 schedule for the Royal Blue shows it making the run from Jersey City to DC (it did not leave from Manhattan, as the B&O did not have trackage rights into the City) in 4 hours. A three hour schedule would have been beyond the capability of that train.

Rechecked the schedule. You are absolutely right. Mea culpa.

No need to beat your breast. Four hours is still a darn good time behind steam (as long as you don't count the 10 minute ferry ride across the Hudson).

The predecessor to the Acela is more accurately the PRR trains between NYC and DC, since the Acela follows those tracks and leaves from Penn Station. The Royal Blue left from Jersey City.

The town of Holliston, MA has a very similar 8-Arch Bridge and it is currently in the process of being restored!! A historical treasure for sure!! 🚂

Commercial jets killed RR travel. Plus the thirst for fuel consumption in planes, cars, trucks and buses.

This photo must be from the late '30's or early '40's, given the cool looking streamlined steam locomotive.

We used to make great things like this. Perhaps had Trump focused on rebuilding America rather attacking Obama he’d been remembered as great.

Yeah, rebuilding, rather than giving a trillion dollar windfall to his rich friends.
