Tragically, Redding didn’t live to hear the single of the song:https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887323320404578213633398825300 …

Well thanks for making me feel older than Moses! :)

Right there with ya Barbara. What a year. What a song. I was in 8th grade.
-
I was 10, but it sure doesn't seem that long ago. Ya gotta love these reminders! :)

“I can’t do what ten people tell me to do. So I guess I’ll remain the same.” Raw exasperation...we’ve all been there, maybe now more than ever. Learn from it & work to change it!

First thing that came to my mind.
love, love this song

I was a homeless draft dodger in San Francisco when that song was out. It has a special meaning for me.

True classic released after his death (I believe) which made it even more poignant. It is forever imprinted in my memory. I was only 13 but it became one of my foundational songs which led to a wonderful musical life both professionally and spiritually. Thanks for the posting.
-
I read the whistle was a placeholder for a future stanza, but he never finished the song. It’s absolutely perfect as it is.
-
Did not know that, but agree love the whistle and the ocean sound at the beginning, bold choice. Not a pop song but hit the pop world big and it was from that song that I discovered his other work and the work of so many R&B artists.
-
Wasn’t finished when he died. Steve Cropper went back to the studio to complete it. BTW, if you go to the Rock Hall in Cleveland, they have part of the plane on display.
-
Such a staggering loss.

Five months after his death at 26. God, for that career to have given us all 4-5 more decades of brilliance...
