No incumbent President since Pierce in 1856 has ever lost his party's nomination..it would have been extremely tough for McCarthy to beat him..and Kennedy never would have gotten in the race except for McCarthy' s NH showing

LBJ was quite unpopular among the Democratic party base and remember George Wallace was a force in some states..I think Nixon would have had a very narrow win

Nixon as other "leaders" are a manifestation of the Principle of Casualty...everything that that exists has an adequate and efficient cause..

I well remember that. 50 years. Made a mess and just walked out. The least he could have done was release Humphrey to say he was against Vietnam.

A template for @realDonaldTrump, perhaps? Of course, to follow it would need more insight than Trump has had since he was an infant.

My question is: Did the networks run any kind of reaction to this that night or next day because as wide open as the race was with the Democrats, I have read in most places people thought LBJ would come and get the win.

Probably in the newspapers the following day. There was very little TV commentary then except the Sunday AM shows

Nowadays, it would have been a 2 hour debate show. Also who knew 4 days later it would be the 2nd biggest story of the week.
