Yep. Sad day. What did it accomplish? Yes a brutal dictator was put down. At what cost in human lives, the swath of destruction left in the wake by his ouster, arguably a "stabilizing" force in a area rife with violence under the surface?

Didn't certain oil companies get more favorable deals post-war? Seems like a fair trade-off, right?
-
Don't give a crap about the bloated oil companies.
-
At the time, a lot of people recognized that it was a blood-for-oil war but were drowned out by people playing "God Bless the USA" on their truck stereos.

Or the ribbon magnets "Support Our Troops", Made in...wait for it...China.

The war of choice. After creating the Axis of Evil (Iran, North Korea, and Iraq) in the 2002 State of the Union address the Bush/Cheney Administration went after the one country that was not thinking about WMDs.
-
France, Germany, and Russia told us their intelligence agencies showed no WMDs in Iraq. The US believed otherwise and we were told the Iraqi government would be able to give those WMDs to terrorists who could use them against the US on the (new term) homeland.
-
We ignored the warnings of our allies and Russia. Instead we renamed things with "French" in the name like French Fries became Freedom Fries or French Toast became Freedom Toast.
-
Bush declared major combat operations over on May 1, 2003 but we would never find WMDs, we would destabilize the country and the region, the US Military would occupy to provide protection for the reconstruction,
-
fighting against insurgencies and the new to Iraq Al-Qaeda which would spin-off a group known as ISIS/ISIL. Saddam Hussein would be captured in December 2003 then tried by the Iraqi people and executed by hanging in 2006. Iraqis vote with purple ink and their fingers in 2005.
-
The war that started in 2003 ended in 2011, but the U.S. Military is still there.

I will never forget that. I remember watching the bombing of Baghdad as it began on my 15th birthday.
-
I know one who was your age that night. With his parents & siblings in their home. In Baghdad. Years of mayhem destruction millions misplaced killed. Water food electricity medicine difficult. Iraq’s new way, still. A generation with PTS, now perpetual.

My life & career includes vets from this, Afghan, & VietNam. All I know served well, all were harmed by their experience. They have parades & thanks. They need services & opportunities. They r our *collateral damage* for waging undefined wars.
